Mower Blade Sharpness & Its effect on your yard.
When was the last time you sharpened the blades on your mower? If you cant remember it may be time to consider taking them in. A sharp blade insures a clean cut and ultimately is healthier for your yard. Cutting with a dull blade can cause a number of issues for both you and your yard. The grass is much more likely to bend under the blade causing you to have a inconsistent grass height. It can also cause your mower to stall out on thicker grass a lot easier than it should. Not to mention the stress it puts on your grass some times causing it to develop brown tips and leaves it open to disease. As it gets hotter the need for your blade to be sharp increases to help your yard maintain its water and green color. The recommended re-sharpening time frame depends heavily on the type of grass you cut and how rough you are on it. Some people will say you need to do it as often as 4 times a summer others will say once a season will get you by, its really a judgement call but if you look at your blade and the edge is rounded off or chipped away a little its time to sharpen it up. Some other signs that it may be time to sharpen them up is a uneven rough looking yard after you have cut it. A sharp blade delivers a clean even cut that gives a smooth appearance, looking at your yard will tell you everything you need to know. You can keep your blade Sharper longer by keeping them clean. hosing them off after use helps significantly just remember to turn the blade on a few minutes afterward to dry it off so that it doesn't rust.
